Dear friends and colleagues,
Greetings from Barcelona. Names are important and sometimes fashionable but scientific disciplines are untouchable and prevail over time. What is really defining our disciple? What do we all have in common in our Society? To my opinion, our meeting point is THE MUTATION, intentionally in capital letters. Mutation and all that is around it, including endogenous or environmentally, occupationally or drug induced mutations, metabolisms of mutagens, genetic toxicology and mutagenesis testing, mechanisms of mutagenesis, DNA repair and DNA damage response, genome instability syndromes, individual susceptibility to mutagens, mutation prevention, cancer susceptibility and many other health consequences. I am sure most of you remember the colours and the names of the old sections of the journal Mutation Research…this is exactly what I mean. And I do not feel comfortable with a name that directly excludes “Mutation” or “Mutagenesis”, as it would not properly reflect my discipline. I have colleagues studying genome adaptation to environmental changes, or analyzing transcriptome changes under saline conditions. Are they also doing Environmental Genomics? If so, believe me, they do not care about mutations in the way I do. I really doubt that just by changing the name, our Society will rejuvenate. It is far more complicated. But after sending this message, it is obvious that I am in the ballroom, so let me dance and propose an alternative name: Mutation Research Society. Don’t you think it is more romantic and integrative? And I take this opportunity to invite you all to the next European EMS meeting in the lovely and warm Barcelona (July 4-7, 2011).
Greetings,
Jordi Surralles
